July 1st marks the first day of the official 2015 free agent period in the NBA. But I just can’t wait that long to talk about all of the potential madness that may occur. Like most free agent classes, this class is loaded with extremely talented players. This includes LeBron James, Marc Gasol, LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Jordan, Jimmy Butler and Kevin Love just to name a few.
We get it, LeBron James is the best player in the world and is the biggest name in this years free agent class. But for the purposes of this article we are going to assume that LeBron James decides to resign with Cleveland simply because that seems like the only sure thing. Everyone else seems to be up fro grabs. Let’s start with who are shaping up as the two biggest prizes. Forwards LaMarcus Aldridge and Kevin Love.
All signs point to Aldridge being on the first flight out of Portland. Most reports have the Spurs as the front-runners for his services. This would be the perfect destination for the 30 year old All-Star. No other team that is recruiting him is in a better position to win than the Spurs. And at age 30, Aldridge is on the back half if his career. Kevin Love’s situation is a tad bit different. He was already apart of a championship caliber team. Honestly, with a healthy Love and Kyrie Irving the Cleveland Cavaliers may have won the NBA Finals this season. Well, that didn’t happen and Love has decided to test the free agent market. Love has reiterated his desire to return back to Cleveland but teams like the Lakers and Knicks will make things interesting. Going back to Cleveland means that Love will go back to being the third wheel on a really good team. A position at times he felt uncomfortable being in.
The two wildcards of this years free agent class are Chicago guard Jimmy Butler and Clippers center DeAndre Jordan. Butler has expressed interest in leaving Chicago and joining the Los Angeles Lakers on a one year deal. The only problem with this is that he is a restricted free agent and the Bulls will match any offer that any team throws Jimmy’s way. Jordan on the other hand is a unrestricted free agent that has also showed interest in the Lakers among other teams. Although he has shown the Lakers some love, the team with the best chance of beating out the Clippers for his services seem to be the Dallas Mavericks.
The Lakers, Knicks, and Mavericks look to be the teams most active during this years free agency period. The acquisition of one big name free agent could turn your franchise around, just ask the Cleveland Cavaliers.
