On Friday August 7th, 2015 the San Francisco 49ners released All-Pro outside linebacker Aldon Smith following his third DUI related arrest in three years. Smith was suspended for 9 games last season due to his prior arrest history. Now, it is likely whoever takes a chance on signing him, (if anyone does) will likely see Smith suspended for the entire 2015 season.
Yes, Aldon Smith needs help like his former head coach Jim Tomsula stated in a press conference Friday, but he also needs a reality check. For his previous arrest not much has come in a form of punishment for Smith. Yes, he was suspended for 9 games last season, but it is obvious more was needed to prevent the same incident from occurring. Before it was announced Smith had been released I made a video stating that he doesn’t deserve to be in the NFL right now. I think the 49ners now believe the same thing. Playing in the NFL is a privilege not a right, and that privilege needs to be taken away from Smith for now.
