Chip Kelly headed to San Francisco as the 49ners head coach

The San Francisco 49ners have found their new head man. According to ESPN, former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has been hired to be the next head man in the Bay area.

kelly oregonKelly’s claim to fame came as a college coach at the University of Oregon where his high powered offenses ranked at the top of the NCAA every year. He attained great success with the Ducks which allowed him to earn a chance in the NFL with the Eagles.

In his first two season in Philly, Kelly posted back to back 10-6 records while making the playoffs in his first season. By his third and final season Kelly’s attitude and antics had worn thin with the Philadelphia faithful. Over a three year span he had seemingly gotten rid of the Eagles best players every year. These players included Pro-bowlers Desean Jackson (released), Jeremy Maclin (did not resign), and LeSean McCoy (trade).

Kelly also faced heat when former Eagles players claimed that he was a racist and could not relate to the black players on the team. The beginning of the end came when Chip would not relinquish player personnel control of the Eagles roster. He was fired at the end of the 2015 season before the last game with a 6-9 record.

Well he wasn’t out of work for very long. Kelly has now been able to bounce back and land in SanFran. Kelly’s tenure in Philly wasn’t all bad. He has an above .500 record as an NFL head coach (26-21) and he did make the playoffs once. But one thing he never had with the Eagles was a mobile quarterback. that will not be the case with the 49ners.

colinThis is a perfect move for both Kelly and the 49ners. I believe that Kelly can help revive the career of QB Colin Kaepernick. The $60 million dollar man simply hasn’t been the same since Jim Haurbaugh left town. He regressed this past season and was benched for Blaine Gabbert.

But with Kelly coming into town Kaepernick’s talents can be put on full display. We will finally be able to see the creativity at its full potential of Kelly’s offense now that he finally has a quarterback that can run his system.

It will be interesting to see some of the roster moves Kelly will try to convince 49ners front office to make. One thing is for sure the 49ners just got a lot more intriguing. Welcome, San Francisco to the Chip Kelly era.
